The main canyon of the region and the ranches where our horseback adventures take place are located 30 minutes south-west from town. Once at the first ranch and after a comprehensive riding lesson, the ride begins.

The first part of our excursion begins down in the mouth of the canyon and along the edge of the river. As we ride we will have the opportunity to cross the river at several points which is always great fun! Throughout the ride those who wish to have some exciting gallops will have severals opportunities to do so. We also have a spectacular 20 minute rest stop halfway through this excursion where we get to search for geodes on along the river bed of take photos right off the edge of it’s spectacular cliffs. It is also at this point that whoever wishes to will have the opportunity to rappel off the sheer 150 foot-high cliff faces! After the ride the ranch women will have a truly delicious, ranch-style meal waiting for us, which includes home-made tortillas, organic cheese & beans, quesadillas, nopales (cactus), rice, salad, guacamole & salsa, among other traditional dishes.

What to expect

San Miguel de Allende is one of Mexico’s most popular towns, but most tourists stick to popular sights within the picturesque colonial-era historic center. During this one-of-kind horseback tour, you’ll escape the crowds and head to the scenic countryside for an adventure-filled excursion across stunning cliffs and grassy fields.

You’ll ride your horse to the edge of Coyote Canyon, where you’ll descend to the winding river of La Virgen. The tour includes riding instructions, so it’s well-suited to both novice and seasoned riders, as well as anyone looking to escape the tourist track. Gallop at your own pace, hop off the saddle to search for geodes, or dip your toes into the river. You can also upgrade to soak your muscles at a nearby hot spring.

From there, you’ll ride your trusty steeds up the canyon to a towering cliff, where you’ll be treated to a spectacular panorama of the surrounding countryside, with the option to rappel off the cliff face. Top off the day with an authentic, ranch-style meal, including homemade tortillas, organic cheese, and local cactus.
